JSPWiki - establishing Wikipedia notability

Rough notes – work in progress.
Note that all the mailing list excerpts below are the view of the original poster only, and not necessarily endorsed or representative.

Note from Juan Pablo on the mailing list:

"As for the wikipedia, maybe a wave of blog posts (which could also be sent to the server side, voxxed, etc.) is enough to convince them to own our page? But we do need people actually doing this, the time we spend on JSPWiki is almost spent on coding."

The relevant mailing list thread containing a heads up of the page which was originally deleted, and the ensuing discussion is here.

The German Wikipedia entry for JSPWiki is still up, and the text as of 2016-08-06T03:44:35.557Z has been captured and attached to this page if needed. Note however from Florian: "I know both language versions, and the German one is not a 1 by 1 translation of the English one. So this should be considered as the very last option."

Reasons given for the page being deleted#

Mailing list excerpts:

"FYI, I started the talk page for the article and the admin doesn't like these arguments for notability:

'None of these help with notability: the first is primary (not to mention that usage doesn't show notability anyway), the second – self-published and the third lacks depth. The same goes for all the references that were in the article. – Dmitrij D. Czarkoff<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Czarkoff> (talk <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Czarkoff>) 07:52, 17 July 2012 (UTC)'"

"For those wanting to understand the issue more in depth, I suggest the following article from well known researchers: Deletion Discussions in Wikipedia: Decision Factors and Outcomes / Jodi Schneider et al. from DERI http://jodischneider.com/pubs/wikisym2012.pdf"

Starting points for proving notability#

Our JSPWiki sites page (which needs to be checked and tidied up if needed): https://jspwiki-wiki.apache.org/Wiki.jsp?page=JSPWikiSites

Mailing list excerpts:

"Thanks for reporting! I had a look at it, the reason was "lack of notability", which is certainly not correct. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:NSOFT

Here are some links on proving its notability:

  • Usage in corporations: http://www.jspwiki.org/wiki/JSPWikiSites#section-JSPWikiSites-Corporations
  • JSPWiki is used in the Liferay portal server: http://www.liferay.com/de/community/forums/-/message_boards/view_message/3363055#_19_message_3363055
  • Recent article in a well-known german computer magazine on social software at Apache, referring to JSPWiki: http://www.heise.de/developer/artikel/Federlesen-9-Social-Software-bei-der-Apache-Software-Foundation-1626106.html"

"A couple of pointers any volunteer may wish to add ...

"Now somebody may improve the text (update)

In 2008, I made a conference specifically about a JSPWiki application:

  • FR: http://www.abd-bvd.net/cm/spip.php?article76
  • NL: http://www.abd-bvd.net/cm/spip.php?article77

The second half of the Powerpoint slides is in English. If this of any use for "support documentation"..."

"We (Quinary - www.quinary.cm) are using jspwiki internally - and also used withing a larger document/knowledge sharing environment for the x-media project - http://www.x-media-project.org. Both are 'private' environment but would gladly add references. Should we add a secion 'used by'?"

"...to improve quietly the existing page (looking at German and French one) but, more important, by modifying other pages mentioning JSPWiki to make them point to it.

I suggest we find articles in Wikipedia which need to refer to JSPWiki and add links there...

One very simple way to detect all the source links in Google Search: site:en.wikipedia.org "jspwiki" -"JAMWiki JSPWIKI"

Another important step would be to interview Jane about the people he knows who forked JSPWiki or use it for humanitarian or very public uses... (Jane are you there?)"

We can also look at the Wikipedia entries for other open source wikis and compare with our prospective page. This should help ensure we are on firm ground with our references and such.
"I would ask them, "What makes MoinMoin or MediaWiki more notable than JSPWiki?" after all, iirc JSPWiki was, at one stage, the default wiki included in MacOS. If notability it a real issue, then the ONLY wiki worthy of inclusion would be WardsWiki, imho."
